Blood Money Rise Under New Motor Cover Rules
| March 17, 2010 by Rob Morris
Government changes to motor TPL will see drivers in Jordan paying crash victims more compensation.
Motorists involved in fatal crashes across Jordan will under new insurance rules have to pay $28,000 blood money to the victim’s relatives, the Kingdom’s government has ruled.
The Cabinet’s new policy for motor third party liability (TPL) insurance, which has risen 67% from nearly $17,000, is also payable to anyone left permanently disabled in a car accident, according to reports.
And the cost of covering medical expenses related to road accidents has increased to $10,500 from some $7,000.
Under the ‘reward and punishment’ rules, whereby premiums are linked to traffic accident records, drivers with clean reports will receive a 15% insurance cover discount. But depending on the nature of the incident and amount the insurance company paid out, motorists who have committed offences on the roads will pay 50-100% more for premiums.
According to the Jordanian government, the new rules have been implemented to curb traffic accidents in the Kingdom and raise awareness of road safety.
